the backstory

Sierra Nevada Cheese Company (SNCC) began selling their dairy products at farmers markets and natural food stores across Northern California in 1997. Today, it has grown into a brand celebrated for its commitment to quality, sustainability, and tradition. From grass-fed, organic, and raw milk cheeses to goat yogurt, cream cheese, and cultured butter, SNCC. uses time-honored techniques and sources milk from sustainable family farms.

Sierra Nevada Cheese Company is a client of MC2, a marketing, strategy, and design company based in Chico, California. This project was completed in partnership with MC2.

SNCC’s brand had become cluttered and inconsistent. Starting with a website refresh and eventually building into additional projects, SNCC was looking for a brand that reflected the family-nature of their company. The only element SNCC wanted to carry over from their existing brand was a wine-red color and their existing logo. The desired outcome was warm, inviting, home-cooking-vibes mixed with fresh photography and a little pizzazz.

the goal

After building out a site wireframe, we played around with various color pallets, site elements, and background photography.

We tied in several shades of cream that gave the brand an elegant feel (wine and cheese anyone?), and also used a bit of gold for warmth, and various blues for comfort.

As for site elements, SNCC wanted to go for something natural, layered, and beautifully displayed (like a mouth-watering charcuterie board). We used shapes with natural edges instead of boxes, curved section separators, and buttons with rounded-corners.

Finally, as a finishing touch, we incorporated macro photography of cheese and dairy textures as background images to various website elements. This practice has since become a brand staple and has carried over into all aspects of print and packaging.
